EIGHTEEN-YEAR-OLD TERRY FOX, BC never saw himself as remarkable. Terry was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma - cancer - just above the knee, the subsequent amputation of his leg and experience in the cancer wards changed him forever. A newly nurtured reservoir of compassion, combined with a fierce determination to bring an end to the suffering cancer causes, Terry Fox set on a path that, quite simply, changed the world. You can change the world for someone as well by participating in our Terry Fox Fundraising events like BINGO in the library at lunch next week, coin drives leading up to our walk on Thursday September 26^th and our Dodgeball Team Challenge the week of September 16th. WHO’S CANADA’S GREATEST HERO? I think it’s Terry Fox! When he was just 21, Terry started his Marathon of Hope. His courage inspired people to fundraise for cancer research across Canada and around the world.  has been doing the Terry Fox School Run for years. Our goal this year is to raise $1000! We are super excited for this year’s ‘Try Like Terry Challenges’ and we’re going to crush our fundraising goals just like Terry did! Here is how you can participate: Spare change - donate it in your homeroom beginning next week, Like Bingo? BINGO Challenge in the library Tuesday to Friday next week, $1 for 3 cards and yes there will be prizes! And Who doesn't love Dodgeball - A Dodgeball Challenge will begin Sept 17th. $5 for a team a 5 - listen to announcements for sign up days. When you ‘Try like Terry,’ you can accomplish anything! Terry Fox believed we could have a world without cancer if we raised enough money for cancer research. So he began to plan his Marathon of Hope. His goal was HUGE! He wanted to run from St. John’s, Newfoundland, to Vancouver, BC, and inspire Canadians to give money for this very worthy and important cause. Sadly, Terry didn’t make it to Vancouver, but he sure did inspire us! It has been 44 years since the Marathon of Hope and Terry has helped raise more than $900 million!! Now it’s our turn! It’s time to set – and achieve – our own fundraising goals. It’s time for a Terry Fox Moment. During his Marathon of Hope Terry set a goal to raise $1 million for cancer research. He crushed it. So he upped his goal: he wanted to raise $1 from every Canadian: there were 23 million of us back in 1980. Almost no one – except Terry – believed it was possible for a 21-year-old, one-legged runner to raise $23 million. But Terry crushed that goal, too! Today, thanks to kids like us and people from all around the world, more than $900 million dollars has been raised in Terry’s name! That money is helping the very best scientists in Canada discover new and better ways to diagnose, treat, and prevent cancer. Are you looking for Volunteer Hours that you can do from home? Community Health Centres of Northumberland have a short project that requires copying of information from a PDF document, to an excel spreadsheet. It’s will only require a few hours of copy paste. Students can do this on their own computers, and would simply need an email address to send two documents to. There is no confidential information being exchanged.

The BOYS SOCCER team kicked off their season yesterday with their first game in Peterborough against Holy Cross. They Played fantastic, dominating control of the ball for the majority of the first half. The boys rallied back from an early 2-0 deficit, getting the ball to Seb who scored both goals to tie the game going into half time. Fletcher played awesome in net, keeping the game close with many amazing saves and strong communication. He was also supported by the strong defence of Ryker, Phoenix, Jacob, Logan and Arash. The second half of the game was a hard fought battle, but Holy Cross ran away with the win. Help us wish the boys luck for their game Monday

October is Canadian Islamic History Month which aims to celebrate, inform, educate, and share with fellow Canadians the rich Muslim heritage and contributions to society: Contributions in sciences, humanities, medicine, astronomy, and other disciplines that have greatly benefited human progress. To further our goal in creating safe, inclusive spaces for all, we are very pleased to advise you that our board has arranged for the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) to come to Dr. M.S. Hawkins and Port Hope High School on October 24^th to present a workshop to all intermediate and secondary students called “A Teachable Moment on Islamophobia”. This presentation explores how Islamophobia may be impacting our schools and classrooms. Beginning with an overview of the term Islamophobia and an exploration of some common myths about Islam and Muslims, the presentation will examine ways to challenge Islamophobia and to build safe and inclusive schools for all students.

IN RECOGNITION OF NATIONAL CUSTODIAL WORKERS DAY today, October 2^nd, the students and staff would like to thank all custodians at Port Hope High School for your dedication and all that you do to keep our school safe and clean.  Thank you for working tirelessly during the summer to prepare for September, for getting our schools ready for events, and for being willing to lend a helping hand.

COMMUNITY GARDEN

Come out after school today the community garden to help the Environment Club close down the garden for the winter and earn community service hours.  See Ms Foster for details!

THE BOYS SOCCER team faced off against Brock yesterday. They were strong in the defence with Tucker playing as the sweeper, getting back and clearing out anyone who made their way through, especially with those slide tackles.

 Jacob, Joe , Logan and Ben held the line and forced the players offside many times turning the pace of the game back in Port Hope’s favour.

Phoenix, Will and Jackson made some great plays on the outside mid field to get the ball up for scoring opportunities.

Tyrese kept the centre midfield strong and scored two breakaway goals. Tanner’s energy and drive resulted in a goal as well! 

Lorenzo and Kody stepped in as emergency back up goalies.. Making some incredible stops against a strong offence.

Congrats boys on a great game. 

The team will play against Kenner this afternoon in Peterborough. Help us wish them luck!

CELL PHONES

Students are reminded that there is now government legislation and school board policy requiring cell phones to be stored out of view during instructional time. For students who continue to struggle with following this expectation, we will work with parents and guardians to come up with a solution which could include surrendering the phone to your teacher, the principal, or leaving it at home. Please direct any questions or concerns to your teacher or Mrs. McCarthy.

There will be a boys volleyball practice Monday and Wednesday this week in the main gym after school. Tournament is Thursday in Haliburton we will be leaving between 8:30 & 9am. Meeting in the main foyer.

DUNGEONS & DRAGONS is cancelled after school today

Are you interested in Space and the Universe? We have free virtual tickets for 25 PHHS students to attend a Zoom presentation by Bob McDonald, Canadian Author and host of CBC’s Quirks and Quarks. The presentation is called “Perspectives on a Planet: How an understanding of our universe at a human scale can deepen our appreciation for our own home, the Earth”.  

The presentation is on Thursday, October 10 at 7:30 pm. Please see Mrs. McCarthy by the end of today if you are interested.

THE BOYS, SOCCER TEAM faced off against Holy Cross at home last night. After a bit of a rocky start, and a few adjustments, the boys settled into their positions nicely...

Tanner, Phoenix and Seb were strong in midfield, getting the ball up and providing several scoring opportunities. Will finally scored his first goal of the season and Tyrese followed that up with another goal on a penalty shot! 

Tucker S had a standout performance on defence - taking away Several scoring opportunities from Holy Cross, proving support for his goalie, and not letting anyone passed him down the line.

Kody played outstanding in net. He faced about 40 shots, one time even making four saves on one play. He stood strong, keeping the game as close as it was.

Despite falling, 7-2, the boys finished very strong and tied the second half. It was one of their best efforts as a team.

The boys will face Crestwood in Peterborough on Wednesday. Help us wish them luck!

YESTERDAY THE VARSITY BOYS VOLLEYBALL Team travelled to Haliburton to compete against other single A schools. They started off slow playing Haliburton keeping the game close but just out of reach of a win. The boys beat ST. Thomas Aquinas in the second round and faced off against the powerful Kenner team losing 2 straight. Everyone played well and we saw some amazing play stopping blocks by Jordan, stellar repeating digs by Phoenix, Outstanding serving by Tyler, as our Libero - Logan didn't disappoint and kept the ball in play, Scott placed the ball with perfection earning us much need points. The excitement of the day and the memories created, inspired Tucker to buy a souvenir to remember it by - a  stuffed fish whose tail wiggled provided Logan with a pillow to sleep on after a tiring day on the court. I also hope everyone is feeling relieved and was able to eliminate some much needed bodily waste after the long and possibly smelly ride home.  Boys volleyball practices next week will be on Tuesday and Wednesday in preparation for our games on Thursday at PHHS beginning at 11am. Come out on Thursday at lunch to watch PHHS take on CCI and SMSS.

Western science is excellent at breaking things down into the tiniest parts, and Indigenous knowledge excels in seeing how the parts fit together as a whole for us as humans.

THE BOYS' SOCCER TEAM faced off against Brock high school yesterday, playing their best game so far!

They went into the second half down 2-0, but then started making a comeback when Tyrese scored off an assist by Joe in the midfield to make it 2-1. Port hope got the equalizer off a few kick, and another goal from Ty to make it 2-2. 

It was a hard thought battle with a tied game for most of the second half, and our players holding down their positions -  Ieyego, Arash, Tanner, Joe, Phoenix, Jackson and Ryker played awesome in midfield, getting the ball up to create scoring chances and getting back to help on defence when needed. 

Unfortunately, Brock was able to pull off a win in the end, finishing the game 4-2. 

The Boys will play Kenner at home on Wednesday at 3:30. Come watch and cheer on the team!

The Municipality of Port Hope is running a free Youth Group drop in every Thursday in the wellness room from 2:45 to 5:00.  All students from grade 7 – 12 are welcome to attend for free food, games, crafts, cooking and more.

CONGRATULATIONS PORT HOPE HIGH SCHOOL. I am pleased to announce our final fundraising number for the Terry Fox Walk. Last year we raised $344 and this year we raised an amazing total of $938!! Nicely done!

Did you know that the ingredients in candles control how much smoke a candle produces AND which chemicals it puts into the air?  Candles made from paraffin wax, for example, which is a petroleum product, release more volatile organic carbon chemicals like toluene, which is a carcinogen.  Scientists recommend using beeswax or plant based wax candles instead.  Beeswax candles produce less smoke and have a brighter flame!  The Environment Club is selling all natural, Dancing Bee products like candles and honey this month.  Order online using school cash OR talk to an Environment Club member today!  

Literacy Test 

In preparation for our upcoming literacy test at the end of the month, we will be doing a homeroom fun trivia contest for all grade 10’s.  The contest will start this Wednesday and will continue Thursday and Friday.  Homeroom winners will receive prizes and there will be a small prize for all that participate.  Let’s have fun as we get ready for the literacy test on Nov. 25, 26 and 27^th.

To all PHHS students interested in Science: This week’s free event on Thursday, November 7 at 7:30 pm at the Capital Theatre here in Port Hope, where you will hear Marc Garneau, Canada’s First Astronaut. His presentation is called “Why Space is Important? Canada’s role in contributing pioneer space initiatives and the importance of our continued involvement in the space program”.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Yesterday the boys volleyball team traveled to Kenner in Peterborough for the Kawartha championship. The boys played exceptionally well and ended this season on a high note. Although we did not beat Kenner our play on the court was the best it has been all season. Nobody gave up - we had Tucker  running into the official and onto the other side of the court to bring the ball back into play, Phoenix  furiously running all over the court to make the best set possible, Jordan  was a powerhouse of blocks at the net, Logan, our Libero, was a digging machine, everyone was on their game. It was an exciting day of volleyball - long rallies, amazing gets - you all should be proud. Thank you for a great season. 

LITERACY HOMEROOM CHALLENGE
Today is the final day of the literacy homeroom challenge.  Mr. Demill’s class took the lead yesterday followed closely by Ms. Aiello and Mx. Kim’s class.  It is a close race for all homerooms, so give it your best today 😊

ATTENTION SPACE FANS

BOYS BASKETBALL
There will be a boys basketball tryout tonight at 2:30 in the North gym. Make sure that you are prepared with shorts, a T-shirt, running shoes, and your own water. You will not be able to participate without the proper equipment - speak to your coaches through the day if there are any issues.

THE PRACTICE LITERACY TEST is going on in the Resource room this Week on Tuesday and Wednesday.  The grade 10’s from Mr. Demill’s and Mr. Warner’s class will be coming for p1 and p2 on Tuesday and the grade 10’s from Ms. Aiello’s and Ms. Connors’s will be doing their practice literacy test on Wednesday during p1 and p2.  Re-writers, please let Ms. MacDonald know in advance if you would like to do the practice test during those times.  You can also do the practice test at home on-line.  THE RESOURCE ROOM WILL BE CLOSED TO ALL OTHER STUDENTS DURING THOSE TIMES.

I hope that you’ve had a fantastic summer – finding time to connect with loved ones, take in the beautiful weather, and do the things that bring you joy. I am looking forward to a safe and successful return to school and the many #WeAreKPR memories that will be made in the year ahead!

For students who may be experiencing mixed emotions about returning to school, we have a number of great resources to support them as they adapt to new routines and relationships. 10 Tips for a Successful Back-to-School Transition is a resource from School Mental Health Ontario that offers helpful tips to support the transition.

With more students, vehicles, walkers and bicycles on the roads, our priority is to ensure a safe school start-up in the coming days. Please be aware that school zones are busy places, and it’s important to be cautious when traveling to and from school. We sincerely appreciate the contributions of our dedicated bus drivers, transportation staff, crossing guards, local police services and municipalities in keeping our students, staff and families safe.

I will continue to send bi-weekly updates to families this school year, with news and information to keep you informed. Student Personal Devices

New provincial government legislation has resulted in changes to the use of mobile devices in schools. A mobile device is any personal electronic device that can be used to communicate or access the Internet, such as a laptop, cellphone, tablet or smart watch. 

To help ensure focused and engaging learning environments, all personal mobile devices must be stored out of view during the school day. Students in Grades K- 8 may not use mobile devices anytime during the school day (including recess), except as outlined below. Students in Grades 9-12 may use mobile devices during breaks.

Devices may be used in certain circumstances, including:

• for health and medical purposes,
• to support special education needs, or
• for educational purposes, as directed by an educator.

While these changes may be difficult, please know that creating and maintaining a protected space for learning in classrooms is our goal. Schools will be working with students to educate and support them as they adjust to these expectations. If students need to use their phones for reasons other than those outlined above, families should contact their school administration to discuss a shared solution.

Vaping in Schools

As you know, it has been our long-standing policy that smoking and vaping are not allowed on board property or in schools.

There are new provincial directives this year that support this policy, specifically that students cannot bring electronic cigarettes (vapes), cannabis, tobacco and/or nicotine products to school (including on school transportation).

If a student is in possession of an electronic cigarette (vape), tobacco or nicotine product, it is to be surrendered and disposed of.

As with the cell phone changes, we will work positively with students and families to implement these expectations.

Update from Public Health Partners

Public health partners have asked us to share that there has been a high rate of pertussis (whooping cough) cases over the summer months. They are encouraging families to ensure their children's immunizations are up to date and to get any needed vaccinations, including the pertussis vaccination, as soon as possible.

Dear KPR Families,

Throughout September, schools are wonderfully full of community-building opportunities and learning for students, staff and families, such as Terry Fox days, school council meetings, open houses and so much more.

While this month has been filled with energy and excitement, my hope is that we each find time for reflection, leading up to September 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

This is a day of remembrance, and a time to recognize the tragic history and harm caused by residential schools. We honour First Nations, Métis, and Inuit children and communities impacted by the residential school system and remember those who never returned home. In recognition of this observance, flags will be flown at half-mast at KPR schools and education centres. Schools participate in this day in age-appropriate ways, by engaging in discussion, reflection and learning that supports our collective journey towards reconciliation. More information about the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is available from the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation and the Government of Canada.

In the coming days, we will be celebrating National Custodial Workers’ Recognition Day on October 2 and World Teachers’ Day on October 5.  To KPR custodians, trades and maintenance workers – we cannot say thank you enough for the work you do to keep schools safe, clean, accessible and welcoming for all students and families!

I’d also like to extend my sincere thanks to all of the amazing educators at KPR who have powerful impacts on many students every day, and every year. The collective commitment of all KPR staff to student success and well-being helps all students to excel in learning, succeed in life and enrich our communities!

PA Day Learning

We continue to share information with families about how KPR staff are learning and working together on Professional Activity (PA) Days to support students’ success. Detailed information about PA Days is posted on the KPR website, at www.kprschools.ca/pa-day-learning .

The September 27 Professional Activity (PA) Day will focus on the following areas:

• Literacy in Elementary and Secondary Schools
• Numeracy (Math) in Elementary Schools
• Secondary School Code of Conduct, and
• School Improvement Planning

Both teaching and support staff are participating in learning sessions focused on well-being and supporting student success. Thank you to everyone engaged in this important work.

Dear KPR Families,

As we approach the first long weekend of the school year, I want to say how truly grateful I am to everyone in the KPR community, for everything you do to support students every day.

October 10 is World Mental Health Day, and it serves as an essential reminder of the importance of well-being in our daily lives, and the need to collaboratively support positive change in mental heath for students, staff and families.

At times, our news feeds can become filled with stories of natural disasters, war and tragedy that can cause us to feel overwhelmed. While information and knowledge are important, I urge everyone to please look after yourselves and loved ones during times of challenge. Please be mindful in paying attention to your mental health, and that of those around you.

October 12 marks the most holy day in Judaism, and I would like to wish those observing Yom Kippur a meaningful time of reflection and fasting.

Dear KPR Families,

I would like to begin by taking a moment to acknowledge the Honourable Justice Murray Sinclair, who passed away on November 4, 2024. As an Anishinaabe leader, judge, senator and Chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Justice Sinclair leaves behind a remarkable legacy of advocacy for Indigenous rights, justice and reconciliation. Sinclair’s work has had a tremendous impact on this country and the education system, as well as KPR and the work we do. Please join me in honouring his memory, as we continue our shared journey towards Truth and Reconciliation. 

This time of year is filled with days of significance that offer meaningful learning opportunities for students, staff and families. As part of Indigenous Peoples Awareness Month, schools are invited to engage in learning and celebrate Indigenous excellence in many ways, and are working closely with the board’s Indigenous Education Department throughout the month to explore resources and activities that support this important learning.

Leading up to Remembrance Day on November 11, we recognize Veterans’ Week to honour the service, courage and sacrifice of the generations of Canadians who served and continue to serve in support of peace and freedom. Tomorrow, on November 8, we recognize Indigenous Veterans’ Day, to specifically acknowledge the contributions of thousands of Indigenous people who served during times of war and peacekeeping.

Later this month, we recognize Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week from November 17-23. This is an opportunity to talk about bullying in all its harmful shapes and forms and reiterate that bullying is not acceptable in our schools or communities. By spreading awareness, and having tough conversations both at home and at school, we can work together to continue to promote safe, caring learning environments where everyone feels a sense of belonging.

Virtual Parent Conference Featuring Dr. Robyne Hanley-Dafoe

Everyday Resiliency: Strong Kids and Well Families 

Registration is now open for KPR’s free, annual Parent Conference, taking place Saturday, November 23, from 9:15-11:15am! The session is open to all KPR parents/caregivers, family members and staff.

Dr. Robyne is one of only a few educational behaviourists in the world and embodies her teachings by blending real-world realities, rigorous research, and profound wisdom with her own personal journey. A mother of three teenagers, a high school dropout turned respected professor, author, entrepreneur and survivor of a life-altering accident, her life story exemplifies her unwavering dedication of spreading resilience.

Join us and Dr. Robyne for a journey on how families can cultivate resiliency in children and themselves through the five pillars of everyday resiliency. This keynote offers parents practical tools and strategies to help their children face challenges with confidence, optimism, and adaptability—equipping them to with skills to be well.

Early Reading Screening

To support reading as an essential foundational skill, KPR schools administered early reading screening to all students in Year 2 of Kindergarten through Grade 2 this fall. The purpose of this provincial screening is to:

• Monitor children’s development in early reading skills,
• Identify children who need additional support, and
• Guide classroom instruction.

Families will receive their screening results, with their Fall reports in mid-November. Early reading screening benchmarks indicate how students are doing on a specific set of reading measures. Students whose scores fall below the benchmark will be provided with strategic instruction to support their ongoing growth.

This new screening process reflects specific skills from the 2023 Language curriculum and only provides one piece of information about your child’s language and literacy skills. The screening results is not used to determine your children’s grades, but instead will help identify the support needed to develop reading proficiency. School staff continue to participate in literacy-focused learning focused on effective instruction that support students in developing as strong readers. 

Dear KPR Families,

As we near the end of the first three months of the school year, I want to recognize the incredible learning and growth within our KPR community. Educators, support staff and administrators have been busy preparing report cards and progress materials to communicate students’ learning to families. Working together, educators, school staff and families continue to support the unique strengths, interests and needs of all learners and nurture many kinds of success.

As Indigenous Peoples Awareness Month in KPR draws to a close, we look forward to continuing our journey throughout the rest of the year. I extend my continued thanks and appreciation to KPR’s Indigenous Education department for the wealth of resources and opportunities available to engage and guide us all.

This week is Bullying Prevention and Awareness Week, serving as a reminder that by working together we can promote safe, caring schools and create positive learning environments where everyone feels a sense of belonging. To learn more about bullying prevention at KPR, visit our board website.

November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, marking the beginning of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. I encourage you to learn about gender-based violence and how you can become an ally by adopting simple but powerful actions all year long.

Register for Saturday’s Virtual Parent Conference!

There is still time to register for KPR’s free, annual Parent Conference, taking place this Saturday, November 23, from 9:15-11:15 a.m. The session is open to all KPR parents/caregivers, family members and staff.
