EIGHTEEN-YEAR-OLD TERRY FOX, BC never saw himself as remarkable. Terry was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma - cancer - just above the knee, the subsequent amputation of his leg and experience in the cancer wards changed him forever. A newly nurtured reservoir of compassion, combined with a fierce determination to bring an end to the suffering cancer causes, Terry Fox set on a path that, quite simply, changed the world. You can change the world for someone as well by participating in our Terry Fox Fundraising events like BINGO in the library at lunch next week, coin drives leading up to our walk on Thursday September 26^th and our Dodgeball Team Challenge the week of September 16th. INTERESTED IN A CAREER IN THE SKILLED TRADES?  Come to the Level Up Skilled Trades Fair next Thursday September 12 from 8:30 to 11.  Students will have 90 minutes to walk around, take part in interactive demonstrations and engage in conversations with different skilled trades organizations and employers.  There is no cost for this event.  Pick up your permission form in the library.  There are 25 seats so get your signed permission forms in to Mrs. Gavel ASAP to secure your spot.

While we understand that these changes may be difficult, please know that creating and maintaining a protected space for learning in our classrooms is our goal.

WHO’S CANADA’S GREATEST HERO? I think it’s Terry Fox! When he was just 21, Terry started his Marathon of Hope. His courage inspired people to fundraise for cancer research across Canada and around the world.  has been doing the Terry Fox School Run for years. Our goal this year is to raise $1000! We are super excited for this year’s ‘Try Like Terry Challenges’ and we’re going to crush our fundraising goals just like Terry did! Here is how you can participate: Spare change - donate it in your homeroom beginning next week, Like Bingo? BINGO Challenge in the library Tuesday to Friday next week, $1 for 3 cards and yes there will be prizes! And Who doesn't love Dodgeball - A Dodgeball Challenge will begin Sept 17th. $5 for a team a 5 - listen to announcements for sign up days. Of course on the day of the walk we will have our traditional Terry Fox BBQ - $5 for Hot Dog, Chips and a Drink.

When you ‘Try like Terry,’ you can accomplish anything! Terry Fox believed we could have a world without cancer if we raised enough money for cancer research. So he began to plan his Marathon of Hope. His goal was HUGE! He wanted to run from St. John’s, Newfoundland, to Vancouver, BC, and inspire Canadians to give money for this very worthy and important cause. Sadly, Terry didn’t make it to Vancouver, but he sure did inspire us! It has been 44 years since the Marathon of Hope and Terry has helped raise more than $900 million!! Now it’s our turn! It’s time to set – and achieve – our own fundraising goals. It’s time for a Terry Fox Moment. During his Marathon of Hope Terry set a goal to raise $1 million for cancer research. He crushed it. So he upped his goal: he wanted to raise $1 from every Canadian: there were 23 million of us back in 1980. Almost no one – except Terry – believed it was possible for a 21-year-old, one-legged runner to raise $23 million. But Terry crushed that goal, too! Today, thanks to kids like us and people from all around the world, more than $900 million dollars has been raised in Terry’s name! That money is helping the very best scientists in Canada discover new and better ways to diagnose, treat, and prevent cancer. Are you looking for Volunteer Hours that you can do from home? Community Health Centres of Northumberland have a short project that requires copying of information from a PDF document, to an excel spreadsheet. It’s will only require a few hours of copy paste. Students can do this on their own computers, and would simply need an email address to send two documents to. There is no confidential information being exchanged.

Top 3 Classrooms are Mr. Demill with $100.86 then Ms. Avery $106.55 and Ms. Harnden $211.25.

The BOYS SOCCER team kicked off their season yesterday with their first game in Peterborough against Holy Cross. They Played fantastic, dominating control of the ball for the majority of the first half. The boys rallied back from an early 2-0 deficit, getting the ball to Seb who scored both goals to tie the game going into half time. Fletcher played awesome in net, keeping the game close with many amazing saves and strong communication. He was also supported by the strong defence of Ryker, Phoenix, Jacob, Logan and Arash. The second half of the game was a hard fought battle, but Holy Cross ran away with the win. Help us wish the boys luck for their game Monday

October is Canadian Islamic History Month which aims to celebrate, inform, educate, and share with fellow Canadians the rich Muslim heritage and contributions to society: Contributions in sciences, humanities, medicine, astronomy, and other disciplines that have greatly benefited human progress. To further our goal in creating safe, inclusive spaces for all, we are very pleased to advise you that our board has arranged for the National Council of Canadian Muslims (NCCM) to come to Dr. M.S. Hawkins and Port Hope High School on October 24^th to present a workshop to all intermediate and secondary students called “A Teachable Moment on Islamophobia”. This presentation explores how Islamophobia may be impacting our schools and classrooms. Beginning with an overview of the term Islamophobia and an exploration of some common myths about Islam and Muslims, the presentation will examine ways to challenge Islamophobia and to build safe and inclusive schools for all students.

IN RECOGNITION OF NATIONAL CUSTODIAL WORKERS DAY today, October 2^nd, the students and staff would like to thank all custodians at Port Hope High School for your dedication and all that you do to keep our school safe and clean.  Thank you for working tirelessly during the summer to prepare for September, for getting our schools ready for events, and for being willing to lend a helping hand.

COMMUNITY GARDEN

Come out after school today the community garden to help the Environment Club close down the garden for the winter and earn community service hours.  See Ms Foster for details!

THE BOYS SOCCER team faced off against Brock yesterday. They were strong in the defence with Tucker playing as the sweeper, getting back and clearing out anyone who made their way through, especially with those slide tackles.

 Jacob, Joe , Logan and Ben held the line and forced the players offside many times turning the pace of the game back in Port Hope’s favour.

Phoenix, Will and Jackson made some great plays on the outside mid field to get the ball up for scoring opportunities.

Tyrese kept the centre midfield strong and scored two breakaway goals. Tanner’s energy and drive resulted in a goal as well! 

Lorenzo and Kody stepped in as emergency back up goalies.. Making some incredible stops against a strong offence.

Congrats boys on a great game. 

The team will play against Kenner this afternoon in Peterborough. Help us wish them luck!

CELL PHONES

Students are reminded that there is now government legislation and school board policy requiring cell phones to be stored out of view during instructional time. For students who continue to struggle with following this expectation, we will work with parents and guardians to come up with a solution which could include surrendering the phone to your teacher, the principal, or leaving it at home. Please direct any questions or concerns to your teacher or Mrs. McCarthy.

There will be a boys volleyball practice Monday and Wednesday this week in the main gym after school. Tournament is Thursday in Haliburton we will be leaving between 8:30 & 9am. Meeting in the main foyer.

DUNGEONS & DRAGONS is cancelled after school today

Are you interested in Space and the Universe? We have free virtual tickets for 25 PHHS students to attend a Zoom presentation by Bob McDonald, Canadian Author and host of CBC’s Quirks and Quarks. The presentation is called “Perspectives on a Planet: How an understanding of our universe at a human scale can deepen our appreciation for our own home, the Earth”.  

The presentation is on Thursday, October 10 at 7:30 pm. Please see Mrs. McCarthy by the end of today if you are interested.

THE BOYS, SOCCER TEAM faced off against Holy Cross at home last night. After a bit of a rocky start, and a few adjustments, the boys settled into their positions nicely...

Tanner, Phoenix and Seb were strong in midfield, getting the ball up and providing several scoring opportunities. Will finally scored his first goal of the season and Tyrese followed that up with another goal on a penalty shot! 

Tucker S had a standout performance on defence - taking away Several scoring opportunities from Holy Cross, proving support for his goalie, and not letting anyone passed him down the line.

Kody played outstanding in net. He faced about 40 shots, one time even making four saves on one play. He stood strong, keeping the game as close as it was.

Despite falling, 7-2, the boys finished very strong and tied the second half. It was one of their best efforts as a team.

The boys will face Crestwood in Peterborough on Wednesday. Help us wish them luck!

YESTERDAY THE VARSITY BOYS VOLLEYBALL Team travelled to Haliburton to compete against other single A schools. They started off slow playing Haliburton keeping the game close but just out of reach of a win. The boys beat ST. Thomas Aquinas in the second round and faced off against the powerful Kenner team losing 2 straight. Everyone played well and we saw some amazing play stopping blocks by Jordan, stellar repeating digs by Phoenix, Outstanding serving by Tyler, as our Libero - Logan didn't disappoint and kept the ball in play, Scott placed the ball with perfection earning us much need points. The excitement of the day and the memories created, inspired Tucker to buy a souvenir to remember it by - a  stuffed fish whose tail wiggled provided Logan with a pillow to sleep on after a tiring day on the court. I also hope everyone is feeling relieved and was able to eliminate some much needed bodily waste after the long and possibly smelly ride home.  Boys volleyball practices next week will be on Tuesday and Wednesday in preparation for our games on Thursday at PHHS beginning at 11am. Come out on Thursday at lunch to watch PHHS take on CCI and SMSS.

THE BOYS' SOCCER TEAM faced off against Brock high school yesterday, playing their best game so far!

They went into the second half down 2-0, but then started making a comeback when Tyrese scored off an assist by Joe in the midfield to make it 2-1. Port hope got the equalizer off a few kick, and another goal from Ty to make it 2-2. 

It was a hard thought battle with a tied game for most of the second half, and our players holding down their positions -  Ieyego, Arash, Tanner, Joe, Phoenix, Jackson and Ryker played awesome in midfield, getting the ball up to create scoring chances and getting back to help on defence when needed. 

Unfortunately, Brock was able to pull off a win in the end, finishing the game 4-2. 

The Boys will play Kenner at home on Wednesday at 3:30. Come watch and cheer on the team!

The Municipality of Port Hope is running a free Youth Group drop in every Thursday in the wellness room from 2:45 to 5:00.  All students from grade 7 – 12 are welcome to attend for free food, games, crafts, cooking and more.

CONGRATULATIONS PORT HOPE HIGH SCHOOL. I am pleased to announce our final fundraising number for the Terry Fox Walk. Last year we raised $344 and this year we raised an amazing total of $938!! Nicely done!

Literacy Test 

In preparation for our upcoming literacy test at the end of the month, we will be doing a homeroom fun trivia contest for all grade 10’s.  The contest will start this Wednesday and will continue Thursday and Friday.  Homeroom winners will receive prizes and there will be a small prize for all that participate.  Let’s have fun as we get ready for the literacy test on Nov. 25, 26 and 27^th.

Your homeroom teachers will let you know what day you will be writing.  Any questions, please see Ms. MacDonald.

To all PHHS students interested in Science: This week’s free event on Thursday, November 7 at 7:30 pm at the Capital Theatre here in Port Hope, where you will hear Marc Garneau, Canada’s First Astronaut. His presentation is called “Why Space is Important? Canada’s role in contributing pioneer space initiatives and the importance of our continued involvement in the space program”.

BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Yesterday the boys volleyball team traveled to Kenner in Peterborough for the Kawartha championship. The boys played exceptionally well and ended this season on a high note. Although we did not beat Kenner our play on the court was the best it has been all season. Nobody gave up - we had Tucker  running into the official and onto the other side of the court to bring the ball back into play, Phoenix  furiously running all over the court to make the best set possible, Jordan  was a powerhouse of blocks at the net, Logan, our Libero, was a digging machine, everyone was on their game. It was an exciting day of volleyball - long rallies, amazing gets - you all should be proud. Thank you for a great season. 

LITERACY HOMEROOM CHALLENGE
Today is the final day of the literacy homeroom challenge.  Mr. Demill’s class took the lead yesterday followed closely by Ms. Aiello and Mx. Kim’s class.  It is a close race for all homerooms, so give it your best today 😊

Treats will be given out on Monday in homerooms and the winners will be announced.

ATTENTION SPACE FANS
The final free activity in the Space Series is on Thursday, November 14 at 7:30 pm at the Columbus Centre in Cobourg.

HOMEROOM LITERACY CHALLENGE
Congratulations to all of the students who participated in our Homeroom Literacy Challenge last week.  It was a fun way to learn and prepare for the upcoming literacy test.  Everyone will be receiving treats in their homeroom classes this morning.  It was a very close competition but we have some top Winners.

BOYS BASKETBALL
There will be a boys basketball tryout tonight at 2:30 in the North gym. Make sure that you are prepared with shorts, a T-shirt, running shoes, and your own water. You will not be able to participate without the proper equipment - speak to your coaches through the day if there are any issues. 

SWIM TEAM
We will have practices on Tuesday and Thursday this week - 7AM at Jack Burger.
Make sure that you are getting your own goggles, or speak to your coaches if you need help to get some.

THE PRACTICE LITERACY TEST is going on in the Resource room this Week on Tuesday and Wednesday.  The grade 10’s from Mr. Demill’s and Mr. Warner’s class will be coming for p1 and p2 on Tuesday and the grade 10’s from Ms. Aiello’s and Ms. Connors’s will be doing their practice literacy test on Wednesday during p1 and p2.  Re-writers, please let Ms. MacDonald know in advance if you would like to do the practice test during those times.  You can also do the practice test at home on-line.  THE RESOURCE ROOM WILL BE CLOSED TO ALL OTHER STUDENTS DURING THOSE TIMES.

It was a close and exciting game. Our Spartans took an early lead, and were able to hold off TCS many times. A strong offensive effort resulted in the win, with a final score of PHHS 50  - TCS 40.

The Port Hope Police Service is collecting new pajamas for our friends at Highland Shores Children's Aid so that every child has a new pair of pajamas for Christmas.

We will be having a homeroom contest. Homerooms will be combined into teams. The team with that brings in the most new pajamas for Tammies Jammies by December 12^th will win a pizza party for their homerooms. The winning team will be announced on December 13^th.

Boys' Basketball 
The basketball team will face off against Campbellford tonight with a home game at 2:30pm. Spartans come out and cheer on the team - we want to hear you get loud and show your support!

The Spartans Swim Team had a great day yesterday at the Northumberland Invitational Meet. All swimmers had at least one personal best, and made us very proud with their efforts and determination! 
 Great job to all of our swimmers! We are looking forward to Kawarthas in February!

If more than 10 students are hoping to go on the trip, preference will first be given to Grade 12 students, then Grade 11 students and so on.

Basketball

The boys' basketball team faced off against Campbellford last night. Despite losing, it was their best game of the season so far! 

Looking ahead to the new year, the team will be out the first afternoon back to travel to Norwood for a game.

Our community performance is on January 16th at 5:30 PM at Port Hope High School in the Main Gym. Doors open at 5:00 PM. Tickets are by donation at the door ($5 suggested).

This is a silly comedy spoof of Shakespeare's Scottish play. The witches lead the storytelling, our Banquo is a great dancer, and our Queen Duncan would rather open a donut franchise than die.

Celebrate the beginning of Black History Month while earning community hours. The Northumberland Diverse People Coalition is looking for student volunteers to help out at their Pot Luck Brunch on Saturday, February 1 from 11 am to 5 pm at the Masonic Temple here in Port Hope. If you can’t stay the entire time, even one hour will help them and you can enjoy free food. They need help with a variety of things and will also have some children’s activities. Please see Mrs. McCarthy for more information. 

A representative form Durham College will be available in the library on Tuesday, January 21 at 12 pm.  If you have applied or are considering applying to Durham, please come to library to ask any questions you may have.  The deadline for equal consideration for college applications is February 1.

Congratulations to everyone involved in the play yesterday and last night. Whether you were on the stage, helping out behind the scenes, or at the door – great job! We know that a great deal of work and many hours goes into preparing for such a performance and a very special thanks and congratulations goes to Ms. Clark. Are you currently in Grade 10 or 11 and interested in championing student voice in KPR? If so, listen up. KPR is currently looking for interested students to run for the elected position of Student Trustee for the 2025/2026 school year. Student Trustees play a critical role in gathering and reporting student voice across the board. The Student Trustee provides information to student government leaders regarding Board meetings, issues discussed by the Board, and motions passed. Students who serve as student government leaders in their schools provide, through the Student Senate, secondary student perspectives which are communicated to the Board through the Student Trustee.

Looking for volunteer hours? Come out to an evening of fun called “Connect: Health, Wellness, and Community” here at PHHS on Wednesday, February 12 from 5:00-8:00 pm. There will be cooking demonstrations, art activities, and even puppy yoga! Volunteers are needed for many different activities. Black History Month 

February is Black History Month, a time to celebrate all aspects of Black identity and to raise awareness of continuing issues and forms of oppression and discrimination facing the community. Intentionally acknowledging Black History Month shows a commitment to providing a positive school climate for and inclusion of staff, students and community members who identify as Black.​

In celebration of Black History Month this year, Port Hope High School and Dr. M.S. Hawkins will join other Port Hope schools and the Town Hall in flying the Pan-African flag for the month of February to symbolize our commitment to honoring Black history and heritage.

If you have an e-learning class semester 2, please go to the e-learning hub in room 206 during your e-learning period. 

Please be aware that e-learning courses appear at the bottom of your timetable, but this does not mean that they are all period 4. You will take the course during the period with no face-to-face class scheduled.

Basketball 

There will be a basketball practice after school today to prepare for our game against St. Mary's tomorrow.

Swimming 

Swimming practises start back up tomorrow and Thursday at Jack Burger. Please make sure you are there on time and ready to be in the pool at 7 AM to prepare for Kawartha's next week.

Parking Passes

Attention all students who drive to school. Effective, Monday, February 10, all students who park their cars here will require a parking pass.

Please pick up a Parking Permit Registration Form at the office as soon as possible. Any student vehicles who do not have a parking pass after February 10^th could be ticketed or towed.

Come out to Port Hope High School on Wednesday, February 12th, from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for Connect, a free evening of health, wellness, and community.

Featuring a variety of free activities, and showcasing many of the local non-profit groups and services that benefit the health and wellness of those living in the Municipality of Port Hope.

This event, open to the whole community, is about trying a new activity, learning together, and finding ways to connect.  Free pizza will be available courtesy of the Rotary Club of Port Hope and the first 50 people in line will get a swag bag with items from local groups and businesses.

Annually, Black History Month is recognized in February as a time to celebrate Black identity, highlighting its joy, excellence, and diversity, while raising awareness of ongoing systemic oppression and discrimination faced by Black communities. Teachers have been provided a variety of resources that can be used in their classrooms this month and all year long.

We are also very pleased to welcome Get REAL for the afternoon on February 21 to present a workshop to all PHHS students on Combatting Anti-Black Racism. In this presentation, speakers will guide an insightful and inspiring workshop on anti-Black racism, focusing on how to identify, unlearn, and combat racial bias and discrimination. Their experienced facilitators will cover key language, statistics, historical context, and explore real-life scenarios of bias and microaggressions. After hearing the powerful intersectional stories of two Black facilitators, students will also have the chance to ask candid questions and get practical advice. By the end, students will be empowered and informed, taking with them actionable ways to support themselves and their Black peers year-round.

This presentation aligns with the Ministry of Education and KPR’s dedication to equity, well-being, diversity, and inclusion of all individuals, groups, and communities. At PHHS we seek to honor the lived experiences, cultures, viewpoints, and talents that make up each one of our students and staff members.

As a result of the extreme storm and weather (significant snowfall, freezing rain and ice pellets) forecasted to develop across regions of the Board over the course of this evening and tomorrow, all KPR schools, buildings, and worksites, including Education Centres, are CLOSED Thursday, February 13, to students and staff.

Swim team

The swim team competed at Kawartha's on Wednesday. It was a great day for all swimmers. Everyone swim a personal best in at least one event, PHHS school records were set and broken, and all swimmers advance to COSSA next week! 

The team will be out all day next Wednesday - Go Spartans!

Basketball Buy-In

The basketball buy-in has been rescheduled for next Tuesday. 

There will be two games: A senior game at 1:00 and a junior game at 2:05 against Courtice Secondary School. 

There will be a canteen set up at lunchtime and during the game.

Interested in learning about Artificial Intelligence?

The series consists of 5 lectures that will take place at the Columbus Centre in Cobourg  between March 20 and May 1.

Volunteers 

2 student volunteers are needed to assist in CHAT GPT presentation at Venture 13 April 10th at 7:30pm and April 11th at 9:30 am. Participants will be using their own laptop computers. An honorarium of $50 will be given to each student.  See Mrs. Gavel if you are interested.

Ramadan 

Ramadan is an important time in the Islamic calendar, observed by Muslims. Ramadan is a time for fasting, spiritual reflection, prayer, doing good deeds and spending time with family and friends. This year Ramadan is observed from sundown on Friday, February 28 to sundown on Saturday, March 29. Any students who are observing Ramadan are welcome to use the Multifaith and Wellness Room throughout the month for prayer and a quiet place to be during lunch and breaks. Please access the Multifaith and Wellness Room through Mrs. McCarthy’s office doors and then walk through the New to You Store. If you have any questions or require clarification, please see Mrs. McCarthy. 

Blue Mountain Trip 

Any students who attended the Blue Mountain trip, and have photos they’re willing to share, please see Mrs. Watson. We would love to have some in the yearbook and also share them with students from Clarke and Norwood.

CONGRATULATIONS TO NATHAN WOOD who competed at OFSAA on March 5th! He had an amazing race, finishing 14th in Ontario for the Para 100m freestyle event. He was cheered on by some of the swim team during his race, and he made our whole school proud. Way to go Nathan, and to the PHHS Spartans Swim Team on a fantastic season!

Spartans - get ready for a night to remember! Our semi-formal dance, Tangled in the Lights, is just around the corner! Dress to impress and prepare to be surrounded by twinkling lights, magical vibes, and a night filled with dancing, fun, and memories. 

The dance will be next Thursday from 7-10pm in the Old Hawkins Gym. Tickets will be on sale starting today in the front foyer at lunch, and in classes during period 1.

Float Your Fanny Down the Ganny - Volunteers

We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers for this year’s Float Your Fanny Down the Ganny event, taking place in Port Hope next Saturday (April 12th).

If you're interested in helping out with this community event, please sign up in Ms Avery's room. Volunteers will assist with games in the children's area and at our PHHS booth. It's a great way to earn volunteer hours and be part of an exciting local tradition!

This week both the Jr & Sr Badminton Team had their first qualifying tournament. Port Hope Spartans fought hard, and the results speak for themselves. All but 2 teams will be advancing to the Kawartha Qualifiers. Jr.'s will play at Kenner on Thursday and Sr.'s Monday at CCI. Jr. Results saw Charli and Kenzie placing 5th & 6th in Girls Singles, In Boys singles Logan and Phoenix placed 4th & 5th. Ryker paired up with Joseph finishing 6th in Boys doubles. In Girls Doubles Grace and Ellie placed 6th and in Mixed Doubles Leah and Bazel placed 8th while Kiera and Jackson placed 4th. The Sr. Team also finished strong with Tucker and Lorenzo placing 7th in Boys Doubles, In Girls Doubles Steph and Kay placed 5th while Trissa and Sophie were 2nd. Girls' singles saw Abigail finishing in 2nd and Lily  finishing in 1st. So proud of everyone, Good luck next week.

Yesterday the senior Badminton team participated in the Kawartha qualifier. Each team played well and fought hard. We had outstanding results. Tomorrow we will see our girls singles, Lily and Abigail who finished first and second as well as our Girls doubles team Trissa and Sophie, who finished second compete in Kawartha for an opportunity to move onto COSSA. Please congratulate them on yesterday‘s finishes and wish them. Good luck tomorrow.

Yesterday the senior Badminton team travelled to Crestwood for the Kawartha  championship. Abigail in girls singles fought hard and move the bird well finishing sixth overall. Sophie and Trissa also fought hard and had to change up their strategy due to Sophie‘s injury. They finished the day strong placing fifth overall. Lily  in girls singles beat her rival from Fenelon Falls to finish first and move on to COSSA next week with an opportunity to qualify for OFSAA in Burlington. All Badminton players are asked to return their jersey to Ms Watson in the library as soon as possible.
Attention tennis players there will be a tennis practice on Tuesday after school in the main gym. Yes we will be indoors on Tuesday.  Please remember to bring your permission form and a racket if you have one.

Cornerstone Family Violence Prevention Centre will be at PHHS on April 30 to present the Stand Up Stay Strong Program to all students.   On May 2 and May 9, Cornerstone will return, along with Port Hope Police Service and Cobourg Police Service to complete the self-defense portion of the program for female identifying students.

The first day of school is right around the corner and I hope you can feel the energy and excitement in the air as we count down the days!  

I hope that you’ve had a fantastic summer – finding time to connect with loved ones, take in the beautiful weather, and do the things that bring you joy. I am looking forward to a safe and successful return to school and the many #WeAreKPR memories that will be made in the year ahead!

For students who may be experiencing mixed emotions about returning to school, we have a number of great resources to support them as they adapt to new routines and relationships. 10 Tips for a Successful Back-to-School Transition is a resource from School Mental Health Ontario that offers helpful tips to support the transition.

With more students, vehicles, walkers and bicycles on the roads, our priority is to ensure a safe school start-up in the coming days. Please be aware that school zones are busy places, and it’s important to be cautious when traveling to and from school. We sincerely appreciate the contributions of our dedicated bus drivers, transportation staff, crossing guards, local police services and municipalities in keeping our students, staff and families safe.

Student Personal Devices

New provincial government legislation has resulted in changes to the use of mobile devices in schools. A mobile device is any personal electronic device that can be used to communicate or access the Internet, such as a laptop, cellphone, tablet or smart watch. 

To help ensure focused and engaging learning environments, all personal mobile devices must be stored out of view during the school day. Students in Grades K- 8 may not use mobile devices anytime during the school day (including recess), except as outlined below. Students in Grades 9-12 may use mobile devices during breaks.

Devices may be used in certain circumstances, including:

• for health and medical purposes,
• to support special education needs, or
• for educational purposes, as directed by an educator.

While these changes may be difficult, please know that creating and maintaining a protected space for learning in classrooms is our goal. Schools will be working with students to educate and support them as they adjust to these expectations. If students need to use their phones for reasons other than those outlined above, families should contact their school administration to discuss a shared solution.

Vaping in Schools

As you know, it has been our long-standing policy that smoking and vaping are not allowed on board property or in schools.

There are new provincial directives this year that support this policy, specifically that students cannot bring electronic cigarettes (vapes), cannabis, tobacco and/or nicotine products to school (including on school transportation).

If a student is in possession of an electronic cigarette (vape), tobacco or nicotine product, it is to be surrendered and disposed of.

As with the cell phone changes, we will work positively with students and families to implement these expectations.

Update from Public Health Partners

Public health partners have asked us to share that there has been a high rate of pertussis (whooping cough) cases over the summer months. They are encouraging families to ensure their children's immunizations are up to date and to get any needed vaccinations, including the pertussis vaccination, as soon as possible.

Dear KPR Families,

Throughout September, schools are wonderfully full of community-building opportunities and learning for students, staff and families, such as Terry Fox days, school council meetings, open houses and so much more.

While this month has been filled with energy and excitement, my hope is that we each find time for reflection, leading up to September 30, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

This is a day of remembrance, and a time to recognize the tragic history and harm caused by residential schools. We honour First Nations, Métis, and Inuit children and communities impacted by the residential school system and remember those who never returned home. In recognition of this observance, flags will be flown at half-mast at KPR schools and education centres. Schools participate in this day in age-appropriate ways, by engaging in discussion, reflection and learning that supports our collective journey towards reconciliation. More information about the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is available from the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation and the Government of Canada.

In the coming days, we will be celebrating National Custodial Workers’ Recognition Day on October 2 and World Teachers’ Day on October 5.  To KPR custodians, trades and maintenance workers – we cannot say thank you enough for the work you do to keep schools safe, clean, accessible and welcoming for all students and families!

I’d also like to extend my sincere thanks to all of the amazing educators at KPR who have powerful impacts on many students every day, and every year. The collective commitment of all KPR staff to student success and well-being helps all students to excel in learning, succeed in life and enrich our communities!

PA Day Learning

We continue to share information with families about how KPR staff are learning and working together on Professional Activity (PA) Days to support students’ success. Detailed information about PA Days is posted on the KPR website, at www.kprschools.ca/pa-day-learning .

The September 27 Professional Activity (PA) Day will focus on the following areas:

• Literacy in Elementary and Secondary Schools
• Numeracy (Math) in Elementary Schools
• Secondary School Code of Conduct, and
• School Improvement Planning

Both teaching and support staff are participating in learning sessions focused on well-being and supporting student success. Thank you to everyone engaged in this important work.

As we approach the first long weekend of the school year, I want to say how truly grateful I am to everyone in the KPR community, for everything you do to support students every day.

October 10 is World Mental Health Day, and it serves as an essential reminder of the importance of well-being in our daily lives, and the need to collaboratively support positive change in mental heath for students, staff and families.

At times, our news feeds can become filled with stories of natural disasters, war and tragedy that can cause us to feel overwhelmed. While information and knowledge are important, I urge everyone to please look after yourselves and loved ones during times of challenge. Please be mindful in paying attention to your mental health, and that of those around you.

October 12 marks the most holy day in Judaism, and I would like to wish those observing Yom Kippur a meaningful time of reflection and fasting.

Parent Involvement Committee Seeking Community Members

KPR’s Parent Involvement Committee (PIC) is seeking three community members with an interest in public education, to serve on the committee for a one-year term, effective November 4, 2024.
